“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1
As a 63-year-old nurse, I’ve spent decades walking hospital halls, holding hands with patients in their darkest hours, and witnessing both the fragility and resilience of the human body. But more than anything, I’ve seen the power of faith—faith in healing, faith in hope, and faith in God’s unseen hand.
Hebrews 11:1 has been a lifeline for me throughout my career. It’s a verse that speaks to the heart of what it means to trust God when the outcome is uncertain. In my years as a nurse, I’ve learned that faith isn’t just a concept; it’s an anchor. It’s what keeps me steady when I’m caring for a patient whose prognosis feels grim. It’s what allows me to pray over someone when medical science seems to have no answers. Faith is the substance—the foundation—that holds me up when everything else feels shaky.
Faith in times of Turmoil
A young mother came into the ER after a car accident. Her injuries were severe, and her chances of survival were slim. As the staff worked tirelessly to stabilize her, her husband sat in the waiting room with their two small children. His hands trembled as he held a Bible, whispering prayers under his breath. He couldn’t see what was happening behind those double doors, but he believed that God was still in control.
Here we see faith in action—not just his faith but that of the staff . As the medical team worked he prayed silently for wisdom and strength. The mother survived against all odds, and while I know the skills of the healthcare team played a role, I also believe God’s unseen hand was at work.
Faith doesn’t mean we always get the outcome we hope for. I’ve had moments where patients didn’t recover despite our best efforts and fervent prayers. But even then, faith reminds me that God’s plans are higher than mine (Isaiah 55:8-9). It’s trusting that He sees what I cannot and that His purposes are always good.
Evidence of Things Not Seen
As nurses, we rely on evidence—lab results, scans, vital signs—to guide our plan of care . But Hebrews 11:1 challenges me to trust in evidence that can’t be measured by human tools. It’s the evidence of God’s promises: His faithfulness, His love, His sovereignty. When I’ve seen families find peace in tragedy or patients experience unexplainable healing, I’m reminded that God is always at work behind the scenes.
At 63 years old, this verse has taken on an even deeper meaning. Faith isn’t just about hoping for a better tomorrow; it’s about living with confidence today because we know who holds tomorrow.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for being the substance of my hope and the evidence of Your promises even when I can’t see them clearly. Help me to trust You in every situation—whether at work or in my personal life—and to be a light to those around me who need encouragement. Strengthen my faith so that it remains unshaken by life’s uncertainties. May Your presence be evident in all that I do. Amen.
Faith is not just something we talk about; it’s something we live out every day—especially when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. Whether you’re walking facility halls like me or facing challenges of your own, hold on to Hebrews 11:1 as your reminder that God is faithful and His promises are sure—even when you can’t yet see them unfold. Lord create in me a clean heart and renew a right Spirit in me. In Jesus name Amen.
