My Morning with God

Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV) - "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Devotional:

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that has been practiced for centuries by people of faith. In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches about fasting, emphasizing its importance as an act of devotion to God. Fasting involves abstaining from food, or sometimes certain activities, for a period of time in order to draw closer to God, seek His guidance, and grow spiritually. One key aspect of fasting highlighted by Jesus is the importance of sincerity and humility. He warns against fasting for show, to gain the approval or admiration of others. Instead, fasting should be done with a humble heart, seeking only the approval and recognition of God, who sees what is done in secret.

Fasting is not about depriving ourselves or proving our spirituality; rather, it is a way to set aside earthly distractions and focus our hearts and minds on God. It is a time of self-denial, surrender, and dependence on God's strength and provision. In fasting, we acknowledge our need for God's grace and seek His presence and guidance in our lives. As we fast, may we be reminded of Jesus' words to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). May your fast be a time of spiritual renewal, drawing you closer to God and deepening your relationship with Him. And may you experience the rewards of fasting not in earthly recognition, but in the joy and peace of knowing that you are walking in obedience to God's will.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we engage in the spiritual discipline of fasting, help us to do so with sincere hearts, seeking only to draw closer to You. May our fast be a time of spiritual renewal and growth, as we set aside earthly distractions and focus our hearts on You. Grant us strength and guidance as we seek Your will and Your kingdom above all else. In Jesus' name, Amen.
